FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Canterbury is an historic city, as such is easy to get around ancient streets, very intimate centre. For me the Lovely Cathedral is the jewel in the crown, and from the Hampton by Hilton Hotel is a few minutes walk, I could see the Spires from room windows.. This hotel has a rooftop restaurant and the views from there are spectacular, I went for a look. As I travel alone I usually eat at M&S Cafes or similar, and if I need anything else take back sandwiches to hotel. I can recommend Canterbury for a visit, I got train from London St, Pancras to Canterbury West Station, hotel 10 mins walk or Taxi £7,00.

    The Cathedral is awesome.

The Cathedral is awesome. Plenty of places to eat and drink....the Cafe du Soleil stood out the food was very good and the staff where friendly & professional. We loved walking around Canterbury, lots of green spaces, side roads that led you on, our stay was too short so we didn't find anywhere that we would avoid.....we'll just have to go back!

Enjoyed the historic buildings and the lovely cricket ground which was the reason for our visit. We ate at a variety of places - good pub (The Two Sawyers), a turkish restaurant A la Turka and the Weavers. Canterbury was compact and good to walk around. Only have to avoid the numerous food delivery cycles

Canterbury is one of those rare British cities that has...

Canterbury is one of those rare British cities that has retained its character as it somehow escaped being wrecked by appalling postwar planning decisions. The relatively few modern buildings, like the Marlowe Theatre, are of high quality, at least from the outside. It's a comfortable size to stroll around (and flat) plus it has the two arms of the river to add interest and the opportunity to punt or take a boat tour. Hard to say whether there are more pubs or churches - there are lots of both, so if you don't want to pay for entry to the cathedral there are other historic buildings to see. Didn't bother with the shopping centre so can't pass judgement on its value as a place for shopping - there'll be the usual boring 'high street' chains, no doubt; I did notice a few independent shops in the High Street as well. The tea shops we came across are insanely expensive so are probably best avoided if you're on a budget. We ate at The Old Weaver's House and had a superb meal - their pies are worth a trip to Canterbury alone! The Beaney House museum etc looks interesting and is free - we just explored the front room which has some fine 19th century paintings. Probably worth a more detailed investigation on another visit.

A beautiful historical place to visit the cathedral is a must £17.00 admission per person but that entitles to visit a full year as many times you like the old cobblestone streets are beautiful with little hidden shops.Afternoon tea in Tiny Tim’s is also a place to visit

The property is perfectly located just a short distance from Canterbury city centre, in a dead end close that is very quiet and peaceful. Unlike a previous reviewer who just looked at the road and turned around as it's a working class area, I never found it intimidating the exact opposite to be honest. The property was very clean and the beds everyone said they were very comfortable, Overall this property is a great base camp.

We LOVED everything about our 3 nights stay. First and foremost the AC that was working to perfection without being noisy. The staff that was very helpful and smiling. Breakfast was fresh and varied. The beds comfortable. The area was perfect, just off the main street in Canterbury old center, so close to everything, but quiet. We would definitely stay again if we are in the area.

Continental breakfast was very good with excellent choice of food available. Staff very friendly and helpful. Loved the city centre location so close to the many attractions Canterbury has to offer, and literally right opposite the Marlowe Theatre which couldn't be more convenient when seeing a show there. My second stay at the Pilgrim Hotel and will definitely be back!

A lovely clean and well located place to explore the Canterbury area. The pub around the corner does a decent Carvery meal and there are buses to Canterbury town centre running frequently. The garden, while small, is pleasant and the lounge, kitchen, dining room were fit for purpose and pleasant to use. I liked the various books that were at the property.
