Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.
Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Chester is absolutely beautiful.
Chester is absolutely beautiful. Anyone visiting should walk on the city walls, go in the Cathedral and take advice from the tourist information centre who are so very helpful.
Many fabulous boutiques as well as well known shops. Lots of restaurants and bars, pedestrian areas etc.
Lovely walks by the river Dee. The designer discount outlet, Cheshire Oaks is great. All on one level or easily accessible ramps, nice dining areas. Staff really helpful and free parking in the multi storey!
Definitely going back!
We ate at the Cosy club, and saw Kinky boots at the theatre, which was awesome.
Chester is well worth a visit!

The city is vegan friendly, as well as the people being friendly. All historic sites are within walking distance, there is a sightseeing bus that does a tour with added river cruise as part of the price. Chester is still being excavated due to new architectural findings.
The Visitor centre is well located, near to the cathedral, and the staff are very helpful.
There are many places to eat, some restaurant chains and many local businesses.

Chester is a lovely City with lots of character, it is easy to walk around with lots of finger posts with information to guide you.
There are lots of things to see and do with lots of History around the area.
Lots of choice with Pubs and eateries.
The hotel staff are very friendly & kind.Good location near the train station and near to Chester city centre, very clean and the fact that they could have charged so much more the hotel but charged a very reasonable price instead esp for Chester, is every credit to the hotel.I will certainly recommend this hotel to anyone and will be going back again at somepoint. You probably will have to book quite early for this hotel as I can imagine it's really popular.
Hotel was central in Chester, very close to shops and resturants. Able to leave bags at the hotel before and after check in/out.
Room was adequate. Had a twin room but after visiting other Macdonald hotels, this one was on the smaller size, good sized bathroom.
There was 1 staff member who got us some glasses and ice who was very friendly and chatty, but this seemed a rarity for those who worked there (see negatives).
This hotel is ideally situated a few minutes walk from Chester’s city centre restaurants, bars and other attractions. Although it’s not the most attractive building externally the room and bathroom we had both looked as if they had been recently refurbished. The young lady who checked us in was a pleasure to deal with - friendly, welcoming, polite and helpful.
Very nice hotel, located on both side of a scenic boat canal. Close to city center and an easy walk from train station.. Chester is a beautiful city, and has a magnificent cathedral. Hotel and townspeople could not have been nicer. Local optical shop fixed my badly bent, prescription sunglasses for free! Very good on-site restaurant & pub.
Manor House Hotel! Amazing room, fantastic breakfast, the most comfortable bed! I have stayed at a lot of places & traveled far this is the best hotel I have stayed in! Old period Manor House with excellent friendly staff a glorious swim & steam room! I would advise to stay here when visiting Chester! About 6 minutes from city centre.
The hotel was located right next to Chester Race Course which we were visiting. It was clean and tidy and exceptionally quiet given it's location next to a busy road. A very good car park under the hotel, which was very reasonably priced, given that we were staying in the city centre.
Hotel fantastic, exceptionally clean and warm throughout staff were great. Breakfast lovely and really enjoyed free use of swimming pool sauna and jacuzzi and in perfect location with just a short 5 min walk into city centre. Loved chester will definitely stay here again..
We love this hotel we try and come when possible every thing is spot on all staff go out of your way to be so helpful it was our 1st wedding anniversary so helpful from reception to bar staff breakfast always good rooms very clean nothing to fault so thanks we be back
It's a classic, three rooms over a sedate Pub. The room was eclectic and cozy. The owner Martin was warm and gracious. The pub serverd a great steak and the continental breakfast really set me up for the day. I like small hotels and pubs with rooms.
The hotel was located in close proximity to Chester city centre which was ideal for what we wanted. Most staff were joyous and very helpful but I reiterate, most!
The breakfast was good and there was a good choice available.
Excellent family run hotel a short walk from Chester city centre, the staff are fantastic very friendly and attentive. The hotel lounge and dining room look to be recently renovated.
Lovely hotel in Chester on the Riverside a short walk from the city centre. Room was clean and spacious. Good breakfast. Free parking. Great views of the river.
